Behavioral Health

Behavioral health is of the utmost importance to the Department of Behavioral Health Services, as well as to Bernalillo County leaders. Because behavioral health can impact all walks of life, generations and people, Bernalillo County is continually working to ensure there is a strong continuum of care for individuals living with behavioral health conditions, along with their families. From homelessness to public safety, access to quality behavioral health care within the community is integral, and a lack of services can create widespread implications.

After 69 percent of voters overwhelmingly approved taxing themselves in order to create a behavioral health care system, Bernalillo County commissioners passed the Behavioral Health Gross Receipt Tax which funds the county’s Behavioral Health Initiative [BHI].

The BHI is overseen and funded by Bernalillo County, but utilizes partnerships within the community to leverage resources, expand services and improve access to care. They seek to invest in changing lives and promoting health, building a strong network of care so that no one falls through the cracks.

Together with local services providers, the BHI oversees the following programs: Community Connections, Reduction of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Mental Health First Aid Training, Mobile Crisis Teams, Community Engagement Teams, Youth Transitional Living Services, Resource Re-entry Center, Peer Drop-In Centers, Education & Training, and Single-Site Permanent Supportive Housing. The BHI also plays a collaborative role in programs offered by the Sheriff’s Department, the Metropolitan Detention Center, and UNM Hospital. Upcoming BHI projects include the Crisis Triage Center, the Crisis Stabilization Continuum, Sober Living for Adults, and Diversion Programs.
