Board of County Commissioners Supports Medicaid Health Care Coverage Plan

09/12/2018

Bernalillo County Commissioners have given their approval to a resolution backing more affordable health care for uninsured New Mexicans through a Medicaid buy-in plan.

The resolution, sponsored by Commission Chair, Steven Michael Quezada, will be sent to the state legislature and governor in support of a public option buy-in for health care coverage under the Medicaid program.

“This is a chance for more than 50-thousand underinsured Bernalillo County residents to have affordable healthcare,” says Bernalillo County Commission Chair, Steven Michael Quezada. “We shouldn’t be turning our backs on these people but instead, creating opportunity which in turn will foster a healthier county and state.”

The resolution sates that the buy-in option is an innovative way to reduce health care costs and respond to federal actions that are driving up costs and creating uncertainty in the insurance marketplace.

Medicaid provides health care options for low-income residents and those with certain disabilities.

The resolution was passed by a 5 to 0 vote.
