BernCo Commission Approves Funding for Mesa del Sol Outdoor Regional Sports Complex

The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners tonight approved $1 million to support the construction of Phase 2 of the Mesa del Sol Regional Outdoor Sports Complex at the Dr. E.A. Swede Scholer Regional Sports Complex.

The $1 million will come from the county’s general fund and will be used to design and construct 10 new fields in Phase 2.

In Phase 1, Bernalillo County previously committed $1.04 million toward this project from its general fund, general obligation bonds, impact fees, and capital outlay from 2016 and 2018.

The recently updated master plan for this facility shows a build-out of 32 fields. Phase 1 has six fields that are currently constructed and a tournament/pro-practice field that is still under construction.

Phase 2 will include 10 news fields. The funding in this resolution will be in addition to funds being sought from the New Mexico Legislature.

Phase 3 will include 14 additional fields.

“When completed, the complex will provide young athletes from around the county better access to competitive soccer and football facilities and will give the county, the city, and the state a state-of-the-art facility to attract large-scale regional and national tournaments,” says sponsor of the proposal, County Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins. “We look forward to collaboration with the city, state and private sector partners to fully complete this much-needed complex that will serve children from all over New Mexico.”

“I fully support this funding that will complete Phase 2 of the Mesa del Sol Regional Outdoor Sports Complex and look forward to its completion in the coming years,” says Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “This sports complex in my commission district will be a shining example of how cooperation and hard work can make a difference in the lives of our community.”

The resolution passed on a 5 to 0 vote.
