BernCo Board Recognizes November as National Diabetes Month

At its Nov. 13 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners proclaimed November 2018 as National Diabetes Month and encouraged county residents to educate themselves about ways to avoid and manage this disease, support all individuals living with diabetes, and fight this disease through education and research.

Board of Commissioners Recognizes 100th Observance of Armistice Day on Nov. 11

At its Oct. 24 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners formally recognized the 100th observance of the end of World War I and proclaimed Nov. 11, 2018, as Armistice Day in Bernalillo County. The board asked all county residents to offer two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on that day to honor and remember those who served, those who serve our country today both here and overseas, and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of democracy and freedom.

BernCo Behavioral Health Services Department Funds Videos Warning Of the Danger of Opioids for Student-Athletes

On Aug. 16, 2018, public and education officials and community advocates held a press conference to discuss a series of short videos entitled, “Opioids, Alcohol and Athletes,” being distributed to middle and high schools throughout New Mexico as the 2018-2019 school year begins. The videos, designed to educate student athletes, parents and coaches, about the dangers of opioids and alcohol, are a collaborative project of the Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health, the New Mexico Activities Association, the New Mexico Parent Teachers Association, and Christopher Productions, LLC.

The BernCo Senior and Social Services Office is collaborating with the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department to offer training to community members on the proper way to safely pick up and dispose of syringes.

BernCo and UNM Celebrate Partnership at North Golf Course

Dignitaries from Bernalillo County, including Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins, the University of New Mexico, the State of New Mexico and the UNM North Neighborhood Association planted a tree and buried a time capsule marking the 20th anniversary year of Bernalillo County Open Space and five years since the creation of the UNM North Golf Course Urban Open Space.

Newest Behavioral Health Initiative Program Aims to Prevent Youth Homelessness

On May 10 BernCo announced the Behavioral Health Initiative’s latest program - Youth Transitional Living Services. Bernalillo County presented New Day, YDI, Casa Q, and Serenity Mesa with a ‘big check’ for $800,000 to incorporate the program into their operations.
