September Luncheon Features BernCo District Attorney Raúl Torrez

Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins invites the community to her next monthly neighborhood luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 20, noon-1 p.m. at the McKinley Community Center, 3401 Monroe NE.

This month’s guest speaker is Raúl Torrez, Bernalillo County District Attorney. Raúl Torrez will discuss many important issues facing Albuquerque, including crime and addiction, and the efforts and programs being used by his office to combat these problems and protect the community.

Before being sworn in on January 1, 2017, as District Attorney, Raúl Torrez, who was born and raised in Albuquerque, worked at every level of the criminal justice system, including Assistant United States Attorney, Assistant Attorney General and Assistant District Attorney. In 2009, President Obama appointed Raúl to serve as a White House Fellow and Special Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General of the United States. In that role, he represented the Department of Justice in critical criminal justice issues including efforts to reduce southwest border violence, crack down on drug cartels, and reduce violent crime and domestic abuse.

Prior to his legal career, Raúl helped a start-up company dedicated to good government and served as the Development Officer for the César E. Chávez Foundation. He is a former American Bar Association/Young Lawyers Division Scholar and served as Deputy Regional President of the Hispanic National Bar Association, Treasurer for the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association and was a board member of the Rio Grande Community Development Corporation.

Please note the new location and date! Our speaker in June will be Natalie Donnelly, Community Food Projects Manager ~ Presbyterian Center for Community Health. The Presbyterian Center for Community Health focuses on three priorities for keeping our community healthy ~ healthy eating, active living and prevention of unhealthy substance abuse. Natalie will discuss the many programs ~ including: Light the District, Healthy Here Mobile Farmers’ Market, SNAP Double Up Food Bucks, WIC & Senior Nutrition Programs, Prescription Trails ~ that Community Health supports. She will also discuss the Albuquerque food desert and how the community farmers’ markets contribute to the local economy. Before or after the luncheon, please take the time to see how Keshet has grown and thrived over the years. Also walk around this neighborhood and see how it is becoming a mid-heights destination site. This is a Brown Bag Luncheon – you bring a sandwich and we will provide the beverages.
