County Commission Approves $1 Million for Gateway Center

County commissioners passed a resolution providing $1 million from the county’s general fund to support the City of Albuquerque’s Gateway Center which will provide temporary shelter for those experiencing homelessness.

The county will sell $1 million in general obligation public housing bonds to repay the money allocated from the general operating money.

“If you grew up in Albuquerque, you know and love someone that would benefit from the resources to be offered at this center.  We are a community of neighborhoods and I am proud that Bernalillo County is stepping in to support all of our neighbors, even those living unsheltered,” says District 3 Commissioner Adriann Barboa.  “When we focus support and resources to our most vulnerable resident, we all benefit.”

The city will acquire the building and maintain the facility.

In addition to the temporary shelter provided by the city’s Gateway Center, the county offers counseling and mental care through its Behavioral Health Services located on Zuni, SE.

Additionally, the county offers temporary housing accommodations for those displaced by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The county now also offers transitional housing through the recently opened Tiny Home Village. The village offers temporary housing for those experiencing homelessness and emphasizes the development of personal skills and assistance to a path of long-term community contribution.

The Gateway Center funding resolution was approved by the commission on a 5 to 0 vote.
