Paradise Hills Community Celebrates Annual Day in Paradise

04/26/2017

The annual Day in Paradise community celebration took place Sunday, April 30, from noon to 5 p.m. at Paradise Hills Park, 5901 Paradise Blvd. NW.

The festivities began at noon at the Paradise Hills Community Center Annex, one block west of the park at 6901 Paradise Blvd. NW, as Bernalillo County dedicated its newest public art sculptures entitled “Coneflowers.”

This artwork is funded by Bernalillo County 1% for the Arts, which is a public art program that is financed by 1 percent of Bernalillo County general obligation bonds passed by voters every two years.

After the art dedication, A Day in Paradise began with participants enjoying games, music and great food, and free laser tag for kids eight years and older, all at this free, family-friendly community event.

Day in Paradise also honored Outstanding Citizens.

“Every year, we honor outstanding citizens from our area for their great contributions to the community,” says Bernalillo County Commissioner Lonnie Talbert. “Both of our honorees were nominated by fellow citizens who saw the great work they were doing to help children grow and learn.”

Congratulations go out to this year’s outstanding citizens:

  • Suzana Demusaj is being honored for her numerous hours of volunteer work with the Paradise Hills Little League.
  • Deane Lamb is being honored for her volunteer work in the Sierra Vista Elementary School library for over 17 years. She also donates food each week to the school Backpack Program.

In addition, the following area sports teams were honored:

  • The Cibola High School girls’ soccer team for winning the 6A state soccer championship for the second year in a row.
  • The Volcano Vista boys’ basketball team for winning the 6A state basketball championship.
  • The Tony Hillerman Middle School boys’ basketball team for winning the APS middle school basketball championship.

Also, as part of A Day in Paradise, United Blood Services will be conducted a blood drive.
