BernCo Dedicates Public Art

07/24/2019

Bernalillo County’s newest public art will be dedicated at a ceremony on Thursday, July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Vista Grande Community Center in the East Mountains.

The two-part sculpture is titled, “Living Landscape” and is the brainchild and creation of artist Karen Yank.

Yank is one of the leading public artists in the Western United States and drew the inspiration for ‘Living Landscape’ from the high desert near her East Mountain home.

This is another magnificent work of art that has been accepted into the public arts collection of the county,” says Bernalillo County Commissioner Charlene Pyskoty. “We’re very fortunate to have this two-part sculpture as part of the East Mountain landscape.”

The central design of the sculptures is the sunflower and prickly pear cactus flower shown as negative space in the large sculpture and then as a positive shape in the small piece.

The “Living Landscape” sculptures are possible through the county’s 1% for the Arts program. This initiative takes 1% of all general obligation bonds and makes those funds available for the purchase of public art.

The county currently owns more than 400 pieces of art, which are located throughout county facilities.

  • In June 2018 the Bernalillo County Board of County Commissioners adopted the East Route 66 Sector Development Plan. This plan created a new, optional property zoning to allow specific commercial uses along Route 66 that provide services for East Mountain residents and for tourists driving along the historic Mother Road. The original plan included only the eastern two miles of the roadway, from Dressage Road east to the County Line. Based on the success of that effort, Bernalillo County is considering extending the boundary of the sector development plan west to include more properties. This plan will rely on public involvement to determine which properties and which uses make the most sense for East Route 66. Please join us for a public kickoff on December 12.
