Fire

The job of a firefighter is one of the most physically demanding jobs. It requires high levels of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance. The Bernalillo County Fire Department Cadet Academy is 12-16-week paramilitary structured environment that consists of physical training which simulates actual job duties on the fire ground. This guide was developed to assist you with preparing yourself physically for the Cadet Academy. Arriving in top physical condition for the start of the cadet academy cannot be overstated. Do not attempt to start the cadet academy in poor physical condition. The cadet academy is designed to expose those that did not come prepared.

If at any time during exercise you feel a sudden onset of chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision or any symptoms that are not normal immediately stop exercising. If symptoms continue and become life threatening activate the 911 system for EMS response. If medical symptoms continue and are not life threatening consult with your primary care physician for a medical consultation and do not continue to exercise until you have had a medical evaluation. If a pre-selected new hire has any questions in regards to the information in this preparation guide you may contact the BCFD Fire Fitness Coordinator at (505) 468-1313 or cblauwkamp@bernco.gov.
