Bernalillo County to Close East Mountain Open Space Areas Due to High Fire Danger

All of Bernalillo County’s East Mountain open space properties will be closed due to the high fire danger in those areas starting Friday, June 15, at 8 a.m.

Ojito de San Antonio, Sandia Knolls, Sedillo Ridge and Sabino Canyon Open Space Properties will be closed until further notice. Carlito Springs was already closed for renovations.

The closures will remain in effect until the forest receives a significant amount of moisture and the fire danger level decreases substantially.

“The importance of the closure of the county open spaces in the East Mountains is that it reduces the likelihood of a human-caused fire,” says Bernalillo County Fire Marshal Keith Clark. “It also keeps residents from being trapped on the mountain in case a fire does start.”

The closures of the Bernalillo County Open Space properties follows the lead of the U.S. Forest Service. The Forest Service is prohibiting all recreational activities on the Mountainair, Sandia, and Mount Taylor Ranger Districts. Campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, trailheads, and National Forest System roads will be closed to the general public, also effective starting Friday, June 15, at 8 a.m.
