Bernalillo County Fire Chief Tenders Resignation, Effective Oct. 1

Fire Chief Chris Celaya has announced his intent to resign as chief of the Bernalillo County Fire Department effective Oct. 1, 2017.

Celaya has been fire chief since May 4, 2015 and will now be returning to his home in El Paso, TX to be closer to his family, which includes two new grandchildren.

“We appreciate Chief Celaya’s service to the fire department and the county for the last two years and we wish him well,” says Bernalillo County Commission Chair Debbie O’Malley.

“The county has a highly regarded fire department and Chief Celaya has contributed to the success of the department. We thank him for his dedicated service,” says County Manager Julie Morgas Baca.

Chief Celaya’s accomplishments include:

  • Completion of a community driven strategic plan which will provide guidance for the future
  • Improvement of the Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating to a 3, which will increase funding from the state as well as lower insurance rates for the community and businesses
  • Improved internal and external communications
  • Ongoing partnership with the American Red Cross, which continues to provide free smoke detectors to our residents

Deputy County Manager for Health and Public Safety Greg Perez will serve as interim chief while the county searches for a new fire chief.
