Weeds Maintenance and Management Planning Community Meeting Scheduled

Bernalillo County invites the community to attend a weeds maintenance and management planning meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m. at the South Valley Multipurpose Community Center, 2008 Larrazolo Road SW.

BernCo has contracted the landscape, architecture and planning firm, Sites Southwest LLC to assist with long-term planning by developing an integrated vegetation maintenance management plan. BernCo and Sites Southwest are meeting with members of the community, and other stakeholders, to brainstorm solutions to weeds maintenance and research alternative products and best practices.

Since the glyphosate ban took effect six months ago, the county’s land management team has been implementing the following strategy to manage weeds in the affected areas of unincorporated Bernalillo County, outside the city limits:

  • Removing weeds using mechanical methods such as mowers and hand trimmers, prioritizing main throughways, parks and ball fields. Traditional hand-pulling methods are used in smaller, tighter landscaped areas.
  • Educating property owners about the responsibility of weed maintenance on their own property, including the setback area - that portion of public land along the road between the private property line and the curb or pavement driven by automotive traffic. See Bernalillo County Code Section 66-225 (c).
  • Hiring of 13 additional full-time park maintenance workers and two support staff.

To report a weed problem, please call the BernCo Contact Center at (505) 468-7777 or via email at contactcenter@bernco.gov.

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States and the main ingredient found in the popular weed-killer “Roundup.” BernCo banned the use of glyphosate on its properties and open spaces in April following national concerns about the safety of the product.
