County Clerk

Early Voting Begins for Primary Election

Clerk Linda Stover announces early voting and reiterates call for absentee voting.

“We strive to make voting as convenient as possible but COVID-19 has forced all of us to change our routines. To the 65,591 fellow county voters who have already applied for an absentee ballot and are voting from home, we say thank you,” said Clerk Stover. “Meanwhile, early voting begins Saturday. If you must vote in person, schedule it now, allow yourself extra time, and do not wait until the last minute.”

Seventeen Early Voting Convenience Centers will be open May 16-30, 2020. Most locations are open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., including Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2020.

In accordance with a state public health emergency order designed to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19 through in-person voting and in accordance with the Election Code, there are fewer voting centers, poll workers and voters allowed inside each location. Poll workers will wear personal protective equipment and the Clerk requests that all voters wear a face covering or mask. The aforementioned changes are expected to slow down the in-person voting process. Voters are therefore urged to make a deliberate plan to vote early and avoid a last minute rush to the polls.

It’s not too late to vote absentee. The New Mexico Secretary of State mailed absentee ballot applications to all registered voters affiliated with a major political party and those applications are arriving this week. Voters are urged to complete the application immediately and return it by mail using the postage paid envelope provided. If an application has not arrived, a major party voter may request an application online. Additional options for requesting an absentee ballot are listed here.
