Bernalillo County's 2014 open space mill levy was passed by voters in November of 2014. The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Facilities Master Plan adopted in October 2015 recommended that a "Greenprint" analysis be conducted to identify and prioritize open space lands for acquisition by the county using the 2014 mill levy funds.

Bernalillo County has contracted with The Trust for Public Land to develop a Greenprint that is specific to Bernalillo County, which will incorporate values described in the mill levy ballot language, and will use stakeholder and community input to weight those values. By determining where the greatest number of community goals can be met through conservation, Greenprint maps will identify the areas that would get “the most bang for the conservation buck.” The Greenprint is a community- based analytical tool that joins community input with state-of-the art mapping and modeling. The Bernalillo County Greenprint process includes:

    • a community survey to help establish criteria for weighting priorities
    • final set of prioritized areas to focus the county's future acquisition efforts
    • a final report documenting the process and the final recommendations

In addition to the mill levy ballot language, the planning team used community input on open space priorities from the many meetings and surveys conducted during the PROS Plan as a starting point for the project. A community stakeholder team and a telephone survey specific to this project will refine this input into the criteria needed to identify and prioritize areas for future acquisition. The criteria are being developed during the summer of 2016.

If you have thoughts or input on the criteria, feel free to complete the Bernco Open Space Survey on Survey Monkey by clicking on the link below. Steering Committee Meetings will be held every a couple months, and afterwards a link to the meeting summary will be posted. Draft goals, criteria and priority areas will also be published as they are completed. A draft of the final report will be published in the spring of 2017.

The Greenprint process was launched in March 2016 and will be completed by the end of September 2017.
