Bernalillo County Housing Will Not Evict Residents For Late Rent Payments

03/20/2020

The Bernalillo County Housing Department, by and through powers vested in County Manger Julie Morgas Baca during the current state of emergency in Bernalillo County, has issued an order to cease evictions of residents who have reduced income and cannot pay their rents.

Housing Director Betty Valdez says residents who have had a reduction in their income due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and subsequent business and government closures are asked to call their program assistant with Bernalillo County housing to arrange subsidies.

“We want to assist our community in every way possible,” says Housing Director Betty Valdez. “We want people to call in and we will do everything we can to help them through this challenging time.”

Valdez says it’s important to note that this non-eviction initiative is for rents only. Valdez says the Housing Department reserves the right to proceed with evictions under limited circumstances where there is a serious public safety concern within any of those units.

Residents will have to provide proof of reduced income to qualify for the additional rental assistance.

This non-eviction directive affects more than 3,000 residents currently living in Housing and Urban Development (HUD) subsidized housing within Bernalillo County.

Additionally, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is the law enforcement agency that is lawfully required to conduct evictions. BCSO says it’s working to keep people in their homes and will wait as long as possible to serve the evictions for both the safety of the community and deputies.

Questions regarding the eviction process should be directed to the BCSO civil unit at 505-468-7140.
