Sedillo Ridge consists of 495 acres of forested land in the East Mountains purchased in January, 2000. An additional 10 acres was purchased in 2008 for a parking lot and trail access.

Sedillo Ridge is adjacent to and east of the Cibola National Forest. Elevations range from 7100-7700 feet and slopes vary from zero percent to more than 35 percent. Before Open Space acquisition, the property was referred to as Loma Ponderosa, the name of a proposed subdivision on the land. The name has been changed to Sedillo Ridge to reflect the local geography.

Resource Management Plan

With technical assistance from the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Program and in collaboration with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division and the U.S. Forest Service, an extensive three-year community planning process for nine East Mountain Open Space properties - including Sedillo Ridge - was completed. On October 27, 2004, a public open house was held at Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras with approximately 150 community participants in attendance.  Draft Resource Management Plans for Sedillo Ridge and the other East Mountain Open Space properties were available for public inspection.  Steering committee members and technical team members - including BCPR staff - were in attendance to answer questions and address community concerns.

In February 2005, the Final Draft Sedillo Ridge Resource Management Plan was submitted to the County Planning Commission (CPC) and to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC).  The CPC formally accepted the submission during its March meeting.  Formal acceptance by the BCC was received during its April 26, 2005 meeting.  Transitioning to the implementation of plan objectives and community-based site stewardship is the next challenge in effective administration at Sedillo Ridge and at all of the East Mountain Open Space properties.

Current Projects

Bernalillo County completed a cultural resources survey and natural resources survey. Bernalillo County will initiate forest thinning and trail construction efforts in 2013-2014 as funding becomes available.
