Project Scope

In an effort to physically consolidate the various departments located throughout the county and to reduce our environmental footprint, Bernalillo County has purchased the Alvarado Square property, 415 Silver Ave. SW. The building acquisition was roughly $2.7 million, far less than the asking price when the property was first listed.

The eight story property is centrally located in downtown Albuquerque. It was constructed in 1980 and is approximately 280,000 square feet. Due to the age of the facility and the required upgrades to function as the new headquarters of Bernalillo County, the building will undergo an extensive renovation. The design-build team is expected to begin work in Spring 2018.

It is anticipated that Alvarado Square will house about 1,200 county employees. In addition to becoming Bernalillo County’s flagship facility, the property will accommodate many of our most visited public service departments and programs in a new one-stop shop setting thereby creating the optimal public service experience for the community.

The following office and departments will be relocated to the new facility:

  • Assessor
  • Clerk
  • Treasurer
  • Probate Court
  • Development Review
  • Environmental Health
  • Fire Administration
  • Commission Chambers

Bernalillo County recognizes this as an opportunity to increase the organization’s efficiency, effectiveness, and will ensure the best use of staff and government resources. The county is currently in the process of contracting with a firm that will perform an audit and organizational review, with particular emphasis on customer service functions and operations.

Following the completion of the efficiency audit and programming phase of the design, the county intends to procure a design-build project delivery method for the design and renovation of the facility.

The project will use general obligation bond money and is expected to cost $36.2 million including the cost of the property, design and construction for repairs and renovation, furnishings, fixtures and equipment, relocation and other related expenses.
