Minimum Wage Increases in Bernalillo County

01/03/2019

On Jan. 1, employees who work in the unincorporated area of Bernalillo County, outside of the city limits, received a minimum wage cost of living increase from $8.85 to $9.05 per hour.

Tipped employees receive the federal minimum wage of $2.13 per hour but must still earn at least $9.05, with tips.

The Bernalillo County Minimum Wage Ordinance, which took effect on July 1, 2013, implemented an annual cost of living adjustment. Each year, the ordinance requires that the Board of County Commissioners vote whether to implement a cost of living increase to take effect the next year.

Since July 2013, the Minimum Wage Ordinance has increased the minimum wage:

  • In July 2013, from $7.50 per hour to $8.00.In January 2014, from $8.00 to $8.50.
  • In January 2015, with a cost of living adjustment, to $8.65.
  • In January 2017, with a cost of living adjustment, to $8.70.
  • In January 2018, with a cost of living adjustment, to $8.85.
  • In January 2019, with a cost of living adjustment, to $9.05.

The increase is calculated from a consumer price index published by the U.S. Department of Labor. The cost of living adjustment for the 12-month period of September 2017 to August 2018 is $0.1947. Because the ordinance rounds the increase to the nearest five-cent multiple, the minimum wage adjustment on Jan. 1, 2019 was $0.20 per hour.
