BernCo Commission, County Manager Highlight National Correctional Officers Week

The Bernalillo County Commission and County Manager Julie Morgas Baca thank the 370 correctional officers at the Metropolitan Detention Center and the 78 youth program officers at the Youth Services Center for their service to the community as part of National Correctional Officers Week.

Bernalillo County has made tremendous progress on jail reform in recent years, and the correctional officers are key to this effort. The county is honoring the good work of correctional officers through officer interviews about the challenges and rewards of the job in their own words on social media; through photo essays that track correctional officers at work in the jail and in the community; and with employee events at the MDC, the Youth Services Center and the Community Custody Program Downtown. Additionally, the officers will be honored at the May 9 Bernalillo County Commission meeting.

“I sincerely thank the hundreds of hard-working and conscientious correctional officers and youth program officers who keep our staff and inmates safe, every day of the year,” Commission Chair Debbie O’Malley says. “The Bernalillo County Commission truly appreciates and understands the challenges faced with managing the Metropolitan Detention Center and the Youth Services Center. To all who do their best every day, thank you.”

“Bernalillo County is working hard to become a national leader on jail reform, and our correctional officers are on the front lines for this invaluable community work,” County Manager Julie Morgas Baca says. “Our correctional officers, youth program officers and all jail employees are critical to a fair and honest criminal justice system.”
