Bernalillo County Earns Triple-A Bond Ratings

06/19/2018

Bernalillo County has again kept its triple-A ratings on its general obligation bonds, the highest possible given by Moody’s, Fitch and Standard and Poor’s, the nation’s top three credit rating agencies.

Bond ratings are critical because a higher rating means lower interest rates for the county when selling bonds to finance voter-approved projects.

“Bernalillo County is the economic engine for the State of New Mexico,” Bernalillo County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada says. “The AAA rating is a direct result of the county’s ability to run a more efficient government operation.”

In July, the county is planning to sell a voter-approved $16 million general obligation bond package from the 2016 election. Proceeds from the bonds will finance improvements to the county's libraries, public safety facilities, parks and recreation facilities, transportation projects, and storm drainage and utilities.

“Infrastructure and services for our community benefit when Bernalillo County has proactive financial management and prudent budgeting,” County Manager Julie Morgas Baca says. “I thank Deputy County Manager Shirley Ragin and the county’s Finance Division for their committed efforts to earn these ratings year after year.”
