“Take a Ride on Us” During 2019 Holiday Celebrations

12/20/2019

The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (ENDWI), Ron Bell Injury Lawyers, the City of Albuquerque Department of Family & Community Services, Uber and Cumulus Media Albuquerque are offering two different safe ride options for the coming holiday week.

Starting Friday, Dec. 20 at noon through 3.a.m. on Dec. 23, riders can open the Uber app and use the code ABQPARTY19. By using the code, riders will receive a credit of up to $10 off for one trip. The maximum number of trips available is 1,000. First come, first served. The credit can only be used for rides, not Uber Eats, and the discount does not cover tip.

From Saturday, Dec. 21 at noon through Thursday, Dec 26 at 3 a.m., customers need to download the Uber app and use the code ABQMERRY19. This code is valid for the first 2,000 riders who will receive a credit of up to $10 off for two trips. Again, this offer is first come, first served and the credit can only be used for rides, not Uber Eats, and the discount does not cover tip.

The “Take a Ride on Us” program gives the community the opportunity to take advantage of a safe ride option to avoid driving under the influence during the times in which high alcohol consumption is common.

“Take a Ride on Us” is the creation of Cumulus Media Albuquerque. The program has been hugely successful through the partnership of Uber, Bernalillo County, ENDWI, the City of Albuquerque Department of Family & Community Services and Ron Bell Injury Lawyers.

Bernalillo County has contributed $80,000 to this effort, helping to pay for the first $10 of each Uber ride. The average Uber ride in the Albuquerque area runs less than $10. If the cost for the ride exceeds $10, the patron will have to cover the remaining amount.

The county’s financial contribution comes from liquor excise taxes – additional taxes that New Mexico retailers and consumers pay when purchasing alcohol. The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department collects and distributes the taxes to New Mexico counties on a quarterly basis.

The $80,000 Bernalillo County has provided for this effort will help fund the program until the end of the current fiscal year, June 30, 2020.

Since the program’s inception in the summer of 2017, “Take a Ride on Us” has provided a safe ride option to nearly 20,000 riders in the Albuquerque Metro area.
