Suicide Prevention in Bernalillo County

10/01/2019

The community within Bernalillo County has joined efforts to address suicide. On average, one person dies by suicide every 19 hours, in New Mexico. The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services is committed to the reduction of suicidal thoughts and behaviors with mental health support and treatment.

Suicide costs New Mexico a total of $506 million combined lifetime medical and work-loss costs in 2010 – which averages to $1.2 million per suicide death. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 15-34. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors can be reduced with the proper mental health support and treatment.

The awardees of the $800,000 suicide prevention contract are: First Nations Community HealthSource, Albuquerque Public Schools, and Centro Savila. The three providers will be working collaboratively to serve the community at large and focusing on addressing the needs of marginalized populations including – American Indians, the LGBTQ community, and Spanish speaking community members.

“Our community members have a vested interest in preventing suicide. Each has been affected by suicide through the loss of a family member or friend, they struggle personally, or they support someone who struggles with mental health. Each of their personal stories share the true impact that mental health conditions and suicide have on families, schools, the workforce and communities in Bernalillo County,” says Bernalillo County Manager, Julie Morgas Baca.
