County Commission Voices Support for Several Initiatives

Bernalillo County – The County Commission voted at its Feb. 12 meeting to support the following:

  • Support for House Bill 79, the Community Schools Act, encouraging the New Mexico Legislature to adopt proposed amendments to the Every Student Succeeds Act and provide funding to schools interested in implementing the community schools framework model. Resolution sponsors: District 3 Commissioner/Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins.
  • Support for House Bill 295, the Health Security Act, which requests the New Mexico Legislature to conduct a study of options put forward in the New Mexico Health Security Act. Resolution sponsors: District 1 Commissioner/Vice Chair Debbie O’Malley and District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada.
  • Support for House Bill 374 and Senate Bill 435 to modify state statute governing applications for the appropriation of underground water by requiring the identification of the end users. Resolution sponsor: District 5 Commissioner Charlene E. Pyskoty.
  • Support for House Bill 204 urging enactment of Healthy Soils Act. The purpose of the Healthy Soils Act is to support land management practices that improve the health, yield, and profitability of soils in New Mexico. Resolution sponsor: District 5 Commissioner Charlene E. Pyskoty.
  • Support of resolution to create the 2020 Census Complete Count Committee in conjunction with the City of Albuquerque for the purpose of planning and conducting local initiatives and promotional activities to increase community participation in the 2020 Census. Resolution sponsors: District 3 Commissioner/Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins and District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada.

At the Jan. 22 administrative meeting, the County Commission voted to support the following resolutions:

  • Requesting the New Mexico Legislature and governor to develop statewide sufficient education for all students regardless of race to eliminate the achievement gap between minority and non-minority students. Resolution sponsor: District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada.
  • Affirming support for Bernalillo County’s Regional Recreational Facility to be located at the Mesa Del Sol Swede Scholer Regional Recreation Complex. Resolution sponsor: District 1 Commissioner/Vice Chair Debbie O’Malley.
  • Encouraging voter participation in the Feb. 5, 2019, Albuquerque Public Schools mill levy and general obligation bond election.Sponsor: District 3 Commissioner/Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins.
