County Commission Approves Raises for Sheriff’s Department

The Board of County Commissioners has approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Bernalillo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association to increase pay for uniformed officers as an encouragement to stay on the job.

The new hourly rate for deputies 2nd class will start at $22/hr, deputy 1st class will make $30/hr sergeants $35/hr, and lieutenants $41.50/hr.

“The county is taking these measures to try and stem the tide of officers leaving for jobs with other agencies that are offering more money,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “Retaining highly skilled and trained deputies is critical to our citizens. We value and appreciate the dedication and sacrifice these men and women of our Sheriff’s Dept. provide. This is a benefit for officers and, in the long run, a money saver for taxpayers.”

Along with an increase in hourly pay the MOU also hikes rates for longevity, academic incentives, canine handlers, field training officers, SWAT officers, and certified bilingual officers.

The MOU was approved by the commission on a 5 to 0 vote.
