BernCo Commission Honors 3 Firefighters Who Battled California Wildfires

01/09/2018

On Jan. 9 , 2018, the Bernalillo County Commission honored three Bernalillo County Fire Department firefighters who traveled to Chino Hills, California last month to assist in firefighting efforts on what has become the largest wildfire in California history.

On December 7, 2017, Bernalillo County Fire Department firefighters Josh Skrondahl, Brannon Porch and Robert Arguelles were deployed to Chino Hills, California to assist in firefighting efforts on what has become the largest wildfire in California history.

Josh, Brannon and Robert, along with members of the Metro Task Force that included Albuquerque, Corrales, Sandoval County and Los Alamos County Fire departments spent two weeks working side-by-side with firefighters from around the country fighting the deadly wildfires that have ravaged California.

Josh, Brannon and Robert, all certified wildland firefighters, worked 16 plus hour days at two different fires: the Lilac fire and the Thomas fire. They were assigned to the Thomas fire on the day that California firefighter Cory Iverson died while fighting the blaze. All the firefighters were shaken when reminded of the inherent danger that their profession brings.

Josh, Brannon and Robert, along with members of the Metro Task Force returned home on December 21, just in time to spend the holidays with their families. Even when their assignment was complete, these firefighters proved their work is never done. On the way back home, traveling down Highway 101 near Vista Verde, California, the crews came upon a tractor-trailer that had caught fire. The crews quickly stopped and put the fire out saving the load the trucker was hauling.

The Board of County Commissioners wishes to acknowledge Bernalillo County Fire Department firefighters Josh Skrondahl, Brannon Porch and Robert Arguelles for their tireless efforts in helping to fight these horrific fires and for representing the county with honor.
