County Commission Tees Up Grants for Top Golf

The Bernalillo County Commission has approved $1.75 million in Local Economic Development (LEDA) grants for Albuquerque Investors, LLC, doing business as Top Golf.

Under the terms of the LEDA grants, Top Golf will create at least 200 jobs with 132 of those being full-time employees with 100 percent of their benefits paid.

“Our community will benefit big-time from an employer that’s hiring 200 people and offering benefits to the majority of them. I’m grateful that Top Golf wants to come to Albuquerque and that Bernalillo County has an opportunity to help make them successful, “says County Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada.

The $250,000 LEDA grant must be used toward land improvements and infrastructure costs associated with the $38 million project. The planned location for Top Golf is 1600 Desert Surf Circle, NE, the site of the old water park at I-25 and Montano.

The Top Golf facility is slated to be the normal three level driving range with 72 hitting bays, food and adult beverages.

The $1.75 million LEDA grant package would be distributed as follows:

  • · $250,000 - a $250,000 local LEDA grant will be made available to Top Golf after it breaks ground and starts construction. The $250,000 will come from funds generated through industrial revenue bonds. No general fund money is used for this purpose.
  • · $1.5 million - the county will reimburse 50 percent of Top Golf’s paid gross receipt taxes until the reimbursement amount reaches $1.5 million.

The Bernalillo County funding is contingent upon the City of Albuquerque making $2.56 million available for the project.

The commission approved the LEDA grants on 4 to 1 vote with Commissioner Hart Stebbins voting against.
