Seed saving is an ancient and important skill allowing people to develop stronger plants that are better adapted, more diverse and vital in local food production. A panel of experts will discuss the history and process of seed saving. They will explain why fall planting is so important and share some of the secrets of the best varieties. The ABQ-BernCo Library Seed Library will be on hand to check out seed packs and answer questions. Bring  saved seeds to share, and join this growing tradition-honoring practice.

The La Familia Growers Market Harvest Festival is on Oct. 12 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, 100 Isleta Blvd. SW.

Learn about the life of environmental anarchist Edward Abbey with readings from Loeffler's biographical memoir of his late best friend. Together, Abbey and Loeffler traversed the American Southwest engaged in a conversation that lasted for decades. Loeffler recalls some adventures and speaks of the complex points of view that led Abbey to launch the radical environmental movement.

Learn about the life of photographer Laura Gilpin as performer Deborah Blanche assumes her character. Meet Miss Gilpin in 1954, then a well-known resident of Santa Fe. She narrates a slide show, which includes images from her book "The Enduring Navajo." She answers questions and tells numerous behind-the-camera stories about her life and work.

Bulbs are like magic. Place them in the ground in the fall and they produce masses of flowers for years to come. Daffodils, tulips, crocus hibiscus – so many choices! Some say the perfect “bulb” is the iris, which actually does not grow from bulbs but from large fleshy roots called rhizomes. There are many choices for size, color and timing. Discussions will include selection, planting and care, and even eating bulbs!

The Fifth Annual Sugar Skull Fun Run will take place Sunday, Oct. 28 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The 10k fun run will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the 5k fun run will begin at 10 a.m. All ages are  welcome and are encouraged to dress in Dia de los Muertos style! More information to come!
