BernCo Participates in Syringe Pickup Initiative

07/31/2018

The BernCo Senior and Social Services Office is collaborating with the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department to offer training to community members on the proper way to safely pick up and dispose of syringes.

On July 30, Bernalillo County’s urban health extension coordinator Enrique Cardiel conducted a training session at Wilson Park, 6000 Anderson Ave. SE. The county will offer additional training sessions in the near future as part of this initiative.

“Training the community on the proper way to safely pick up and dispose of syringes can help people avoid the danger of accidental needle sticks from used syringes,” says Enrique Cardiel, who is also the county’s representative on the International District Healthy Communities Coalition.

“Children and pets are the most vulnerable victims of these needle sticks and this training can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe,” says Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins. “I encourage community groups and individuals to sign-up to receive this valuable training.”

Residents can call 798-7000 if they are in the unincorporated areas of the county, outside the city limits of Albuquerque, to report syringes in their area. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department or the Bernalillo County Fire Department will respond, but this will be treated as a non-emergency, public safety response.

“The Sheriff’s Office supports this type of program, as we do not recommend anyone picking up a syringe without proper safety training,” says Deputy Johann Jareno of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department.

Also this afternoon, the city announced that the community can call 311 to request training and/or pick up of syringes.
