Search Continues for Mistakenly Released MDC Inmate

06/11/2018

The Metropolitan Detention Center and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department are continuing to work with our law enforcement partners in the search for mistakenly released MDC inmate Duwin Perez-Cordova. The 27-year-old was last seen at the intersection of 4th St and Roma Ave NW, which is MDC’s downtown release location. The investigation into the incident has led investigators to believe Perez-Cordova was aided by his cellmate in his efforts to be released from MDC.

Perez-Cordova had been sharing a cell with Inmate Edwin Lorenzo Sanchez, 23, (DOB 08/05/1994) for approximately one month. MDC investigators believe Sanchez switched identification wristbands with Perez-Cordova, and also gave him his personal information. Sanchez had been scheduled to be released Sunday. He has been charged for his alleged role in this incident with conspiracy and assisting with an escape.

Perez-Cordova was also being held on a federal warrant. He should not be approached by the public. Anyone with information about Perez-Cordova’s whereabouts is asked to call the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department at 798-7000 or 911.

The internal investigation by MDC officials is underway to determine how this happened, but the current focus is apprehending Perez-Cordova. Media will be updated as new information is available.
