Plastic Bag and Single-use Polystyrene Containers Ban Goes into Effect on Jan. 1, 2020 in Unincorporated Bernalillo County

Beginning Jan.1, 2020, retailers in the unincorporated areas of Bernalillo County, outside the city limits of Albuquerque and the village limits of Tijeras and Los Ranchos, will be required to stop providing plastic single-use carryout bags and single-use polystyrene containers to customers.

Retail establishments shall provide only the following carryout item types at checkout to customers: reusable bags, reusable containers, recyclable paper bags, recyclable containers, and/or cardboard boxes.

The Board of County Commissioners passed the ordinance on June 25, 2019.

The ordinance also requires that a temporary administrative committee complete an impact study within two years of the date the ordinance goes into effect to evaluate the impact of the ordinance and present a report to the Board of County Commissioners before June 30, 2022.
