Planning & Development Services

The Planning Section is responsible for a wide range of short and long-term development functions, including administration of land use ordinances (i.e. subdivision, zoning and impact fees), and drafting plans, studies and ordinances.

The Planning Department processes all current land use cases (zone changes/Special Use Permits, master plans, plan amendments, sector plans) for the County.

Planning Our Route 66
Through the Bernalillo County Planning Section, there is an opportunity to positively affect the easternmost area of the county that runs along Route 66.

The great investment made by earlier property owners on this section of Route 66 was not in vain. There is current interest and energy in not only honoring that past, but connecting it to the 21st Century. 

Coming home to the Mother Road
Beginning in the late 1920s, the Mother Road was a destination in itself. From California to Illinois, 2,448 miles of landscape, diners, motor lodges, neon signs, and other sights to marvel at defined and exposed American cultural along the open road. Towns and entrepreneurs invested brain, brawn and bucks to transform loacles ensuring a connection to Route 66.
 
Route 66The initial promotion of Route 66 can be credited to entrepreneurs Cyrus Avery of Tulsa, Okla., and John Woodruff of Springfield. Mo. Although recent economic challenges have slowed business development in our area, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. Most important is inclusion of the entire community in strengthening conditions of the area in order to improve the quality of life for all.
 
Community Involvement
At a meeting on May 15, 2013, a total of 22 area residents and business owners attended the second public meeting of the East Route 66 sector development plan process, held at the Masonic Lodge on NM 333 from 6-7:30pm. Barbara Herrington of Sites Southwest gave a PowerPoint presentation that covered the area’s context and potential zoning/design solutions.The presentation slides can be seen by clicking here.
