County Youth Services Center Screens "A Place to Stand"

Jimmy Santiago BacaOn Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2014, internationally renowned poet Jimmy Santiago Baca screened his new film, “A Place to Stand,” for select partners and residents of the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center (BCYSC). The movie is based on Baca’s critically-acclaimed memoir, depicting much of his life growing up in New Mexico challenged by neglect, illiteracy, and system-involved struggles; to profound transformation through the prose of poetry and ultimate redemption.

The film’s U.S. premiere occurred in September in Santa Fe and has been hailed by The Los Angeles Times as “elegant and gripping.” The screening was sponsored by Albuquerque Public Schools, Bernalillo County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley, Bernalillo County Division of Public Safety, and Bernalillo County Cultural Services.

“I would like to thank Mr. Baca for sharing his film with the Youth Services Center community,” says Youth Services Center Director Craig Sparks. “From his difficult past to his current acclaim as a poet, Mr. Baca has a challenging story to share that will resonate with the residents at BCYSC.”
