Commissioner Collie Attends Grand Re-Opening of the De Anza Motor Lodge

03/16/2020

Commissioner James M. Collie attended the Grand Re-Opening of the De Anza Motor Lodge on Tuesday, March 10.

The event included a re-introduction of the Shalako Ceremonial Procession Murals and a painting created by renowned artist, R.C. Nowlin, especially for the De Anza.

The De Anza Motel was built in 1939 by Charles G. Wallace who decorated the motel with a variety of Native American art, including a series of murals by Zuni artist Tony Edaakie.

The City of Albuquerque purchased the De Anza in 2003 but it remained vacant while various renovation proposals fell through. Ultimately the city approved a plan to redevelop the site.

In 2019 the Bernalillo County Commission approved $350,000 in Local Economic Development Act funding (LEDA). The Zuni Murals in the motel basement, the Turquoise Café floor and historic De Anza sign were preserved as part of the agreement. The county also has a seat on the Route 66 De Anza Association board and can organize two tours of the murals.
