Learn How to Prepare You, Your Home and Your Pets for an Emergency with BernCo Public Safety Agencies

Get the emergency preparedness information you need to know in a free, three-day workshop in March featuring presentations by a number of city and county local public safety agencies, including the Bernalillo County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department, Bernalillo County Animal Care Services and the Bernalillo County Fire Department.

The goal of the workshop is to prepare citizens for a major incident that would cause significant damage and require evacuation. The public safety agencies also want to create partnerships with community organizations in an effort to raise awareness about emergency preparedness and familiarize citizens with standard plans and procedures.

Attendees will learn about the different roles and responsibilities of first responders in an emergency and how homeowners can be prepared – including the steps they should take when an order of evacuation is issued and what they need to pack in the “go-bag” they should have ready for that situation.

This event is being hosted by the Sandia Heights Homeowners Association, but it is free and open to the public. It will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on March 19, 20 and 21 on the lower level of the Church of the Good Shepherd, 7834 Tennyson NE.

  • On March 19, BernCo Fire will discuss the basic response to a wildland fire in this area, discuss immediate actions a homeowner can take to mitigate damage and explain how to prepare homes for evacuations.
  • On March 20, the Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Management will discuss emergency communication and evacuation procedures.
  • On March 21, BernCo’s Animal Care Services officers will be on hand to discuss animal emergency readiness, including the evacuations process, animal shelter expectations and resources and pet supplies and “go-kits” for animals.
