The county’s Human Resources Department is responsible for the administration and oversight of personnel and the county’s system, which consists of approximately 2,450 employees.

The employment section of the Human Resources Department is responsible for the county’s recruitment and selection processes. The section also provides oversight and guidance to county departments on hiring procedures and policies.

Application Process

After you apply for a position with Bernalillo County, there is a minimum qualification screening. This process is done using the NEOGOV system, which automatically screens all applicants based on their responses to the supplemental questions on a pass/fail basis to determine if the applicant has met or exceeded the minimum qualifications, or if you have any statutory requirements, such as a veteran status.

The county’s Human Resources Department staff then review and verify the applicant’s relevant experience, education, and supplemental questions.

Applications may be rejected if:

  • A level of education can’t be verified, i.e. no transcripts attached, or don’t indicate the degree awarded or the date conferred.
  • Stated years of related experience can’t be verified within the work experience section of the application, i.e. not enough information provided, insufficient work history, inapplicable experience attributed to work history.
  • The application is incomplete in ANY capacity
  • A WorkKeys assessment test is not attached to the application.

Department staff then forwards the qualified candidate listing to the department with the job opening for review; and the department-specific interview and selection process then takes place.

Due to the high level of interest in some of our positions, not all eligible applicants will be interviewed.

Documents You Will Need

Work History

You are required to include your work experience in the Work Experience Section of your NEOGOV application. If you have previously included work history on a resume (attached, or copy and pasted) you must transfer your work history into the Work Experience Section prior to applying. Text resumes and attached resumes will no longer be reviewed or considered. Please review the job posting, specifically the purpose of the position and the minimum qualifications, prior to answering the work experience question; and note that only related work experience will be considered.

College Transcripts

If you have completed education higher than a high school diploma or GED, you must attach a copy of your official/unofficial transcript(s) that clearly state the type of degree and date awarded/conferred, institution name, and applicant name; and is in a format that cannot be modified or edited. Your application will not be considered for further review if you have failed to provide this information. Transcripts from outside the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. This documentation must be attached to your application if you are certifying you have an education higher than high school/GED.

Professional Licenses

To determine if a position requires a certificate or license, please review the minimum qualification section of the job advertisement.  If a position requires a license/certificate, please complete the Certificate and License section of the application; or attach the actual license/certificate to the application.

Military Documents

The State of New Mexico and Bernalillo County recognize that preference will be granted to U.S. veterans, disabled veterans, and members of the National Guard. Any member of the above groups who meet the posted job qualifications shall be granted interviews by hiring departments. Please note that to be entitled to a preference, a U.S. veteran must meet eligibility requirements – an honorable or general discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces; an honorable discharge with a service-connected disability from the U.S. Armed Forces; or a person currently serving in the National Guard. Tips to Apply:

  • You do not need to create a separate application for every job for which you’d like to apply.
  • If you already have an account, log in using your username and password. You will not be able to create another account using the same e-mail address.
  • It is important that your application show all relevant education and experience you possess, including month and year start and end dates, i.e. May 2005 – April 2010. If you held several positions while employed with one organization, please add a new work experience section for each of those positions.
  • Include accurate contact information for your current and previous employer(s).

Application Status

Status updates for positions are available to applicants by logging in to your NEOGOV account; or you will receive communication about your application via the e-mail you used when creating your NEOGOV account. Please check your spam folders and add to your contact list for the fastest response; and also check your NEOGOV account regularly.

Once you have filled out and submitted your application successfully, your status should read “application received.” If it doesn’t, you may have filled out the application, but did not submit it. Return to the position title you are interested in and “apply” to complete the application process.

Job Interest Cards

If you are interested in positions which are not yet open for recruitment, you may submit a Job Interest Card. When the recruitment for a position of interest opens for applications, you will be notified at the e-mail address you provide. You’ll also receive an e-mail reminder in 11 months to give you an opportunity to extend your notifications for another year.

Job Mentor Program

The county’s Job Mentor Program offers high school students an opportunity to explore career options and apply their skills and knowledge to the workplace. Please submit an interest card and when positions become available, you will be notified by e-mail.


Are you interested in an internship? Bernalillo County provides job opportunities to learn new skills and build valuable work experience. Interns will work under the direct supervision of a professional staff, and will perform a wide range of projects within assigned areas.

Internship applicants must have a high school diploma or a GED, and must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution or technical school recognized by the state of New Mexico. Please go to our job opportunities link for more information.

Part-Time, Summer Employment

Are you looking for a great summer job opportunity? If you are at least 16 years of age and currently enrolled in high school, a GED program, a vocational school, or college consider applying for summer jobs with Bernalillo County.

The Bernalillo County Human Resources Department recruits for summer community center staff, aquatics staff and summer lunch program staff. 

  • The Parks and Recreation Aquatics program hires staff for the Bernalillo County pools and spray park. Successful lifeguard candidates will have current Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certifications. 





  • The Parks and Recreation Department selects and trains staff for summer recreation programs at Bernalillo County community centers.

  • Bernalillo County’s Office of Health and Social Services hires staff that provide free and nutritious meals during the summer from June to August.
