County Clerk

An absentee ballot may be cast by any eligible voter.

Absentee voting is governed under the Absent Voter Act (Chapter 1, Article 6 NMSA 1978)

2020 Primary Update: Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver has mailed absentee ballot applications to all major party voters in New Mexico who had not already requested one. Please watch your mail for it, complete the application immediately and return it in the postage paid envelope provided. If you requested an absentee ballot online, you can check the status of your request here. If you have not received an application and are concerned that perhaps your voter registration address is not current, follow the instructions below. The last day an application for an absentee ballot may be submitted is May 28, 2020. Absentee ballots must be received by the Clerk's Office by mail or hand-delivered to a Voting Convenience Center by 7 p.m. on June 2, 2020.

To request an absentee ballot:

  • The best way is to complete the absentee ballot application online. Your absentee ballot will be mailed to you. When it arrives, fill out and sign your ballot, and return it in the postage paid envelope provided.
    • You must have a NM driver's license to use this option.
  • The next best option is to download the application here. Print, complete and sign according to the instructions, and mail it using your own postage stamp.
  • The other two options require the Clerk's Office to mail an application to you. When it arrives, you must complete the application and mail it back. When the Clerk's Office receives and processes your application, then an absentee ballot will be mailed.
    • Request an application by phone (505) 243-VOTE (8683), option 2. The application will be mailed to you to complete and mail back using your own postage stamp.
    • Email your request to clerk@bernco.gov. The application will be mailed to you to complete and mail back using your own postage stamp.

Please call (505) 243-VOTE (8683) with any questions regarding absentee voting in Bernalillo County.
