A Timeline of the History of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Community Schools Partnership 

2006 -2012

  • 2006: APS, Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque adopt Community School resolutions
  • 2007: ABC Community School Partnership is formed through joint powers agreement, supports one community school
  • 2010: Receives grant from Kellogg Foundation to develop three more community schools
  • 2012: City of Albuquerque resolved to have ABC provide programmatic oversight of $1.2 mil working with over 70 schools
  • 2012: Hires first executive director

2013

  • Albuquerque Teachers Federation adopts a Community School Resolution
  • State of New Mexico passes a Community Schools Act
  • Bernalillo County restructures staffing to support ABC infrastructure 
  • YDI-Elev8 and ABC unites to develop 10 community schools

2014

  • Homework Diner highlighted twice on NBC Nightly News and is a finalist for the Cities of Service competition
  • Hosts the American Federation of Teachers First Regional Community School Learning Lab
  • AFT-NM adopts the slogan, “Keep the Promise…Every Child Deserves a Community School”
  • Initiated Community School Statewide Network
  • Executive director wins 1st ever national Community School Leadership Award
  • Won bid to host the 2016 Community School National Forum in Albuquerque
  • Growing interest in Community Schools with 16 now in development
  • University of New Mexico conducts pilots Coordinator Institute

2015

  • APS leadership incorporates a community school development meeting with principals

  • In this workshop, we will use the ABQ Backyard Refuge Program (ABQ BRP) workbook and learn a myriad of ways the Bachechi Open Space might better support local plants and wildlife. Meet with the ABQ BRP team who will feature Bachechi Open Space as an example to demonstrate the first step in becoming a certified habitat – and in turn, be able to certify your own garden as a backyard refuge. Registration closes May 14.

  • Are you fascinated by the weather? Learn how to stay safe and be prepared. Join National Weather Service of Albuquerque Meteorologist who will teach the basics of severe local storms. This incredible two-hour workshop includes training about thunderstorms, flash floods, downburst winds, tornadoes, and more. This event is part of the volunteer SKYWARN weather spotters and volunteers training for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). Registration closes May 21.
