El Camino Real Trade Fair Begins Friday

04/08/2021
9:02 AM

Bernalillo County and community partners have teamed up to present the 2021 El Camino Real Trade Fair. The series of virtual events will take place Friday evenings and Saturday mornings for the next four weeks on the El Camino Real Trade Fair Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/elcaminorealtradefair/.

“The goal is to entertain, educate and engage residents with cooking, music, stories and demonstrations relating to the historic El Camino Real,” says Enrico Gradi, Deputy County Manager, Community Services. “With any luck, this will resume as an in-person community event next year. But we are so pleased with the many fun, interactive and educational activities lined up this year!”

Event videos will be premiered on the El Camino Real Trade Fair Facebook page at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays. This week’s activities are listed below. The full schedule is here and will be announced by news release each week.

New this year is an interactive digital story map that takes the virtual event to a new level. The El Camino Real Trade Fair Story Map produced by Bernalillo County combines geographic information system (GIS) mapping with digital multimedia to add spatial context to the storytelling. On the story map, event-goers can virtually travel the El Camino Real and visit the locations of the trade fair stories, demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Participating organizations include Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez/Minge House, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail (National Park Service), Gutierrez Hubbell House Alliance and New Mexico Historic Sites.

To supplement the virtual offerings, partners have put together El Camilo Trade Fair grab and go activity packets. The activity packets can be picked up in person at one of three sites along the Camino. The packets are available on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last. One packet per family, please.

The packets include:

  • Camino Real Junior Ranger activity sheet
  • Cookie Excavation activity
  • What do Archaeologists Find? activity
  • Tools of an Archaeologist activity
  • The Traditional Dichos “Sayings” of New Mexico activity
  • Camino Real Paraje puzzle activity
  • Community Voices Storytelling coloring pages and activities
  • Make Your Own Papel Picado kit including paper, scissors, string, and instructions
  • Stickers, temporary tattoos, pencils, and more

Also included are brochures and information for families to plan their own adventure along the Camino, provided by the National Park Service, New Mexico Historic Sites and Bernalillo County Open Space. Please note that many of the activity sheets will also available for download on the Camino Real Trade Fair story map.
